JCHS SEMINAR GRADING POLICY
The purpose of the seminar period is to provide students with tutorial and activity program participation opportunities. It is mandatory that seminar students strictly follow the rules of seminar period and that the seminar classroom environment be one in which all students can learn.
Students are to sign out ONLY to teachers that they are currently taking a class under, club meetings, writing lab, math lab, computer lab, or library.
SEMINAR IS WORTH ¼ CREDIT PER SEMESTER. Each seminar is worth 10 POINTS and grades will be determined by the percentage of the possible points accumulated throughout the grading period using the following grading scale: A = 94% - 100%, B = 87% - 93%, C = 80% - 86%, and F = 0% - 79%. In addition, A STUDENT WILL NOT EARN CREDIT IN SEMINAR IF THE TOTAL NUMBER OF ABSENCES (EXCUSED OR UNEXCUSED) EXCEEDS NINE IN A SEMESTER. School related activities are not included in this total.
A loss of THREE points will occur each time the student:
talks without consent of the teacher
disrupts the learning environment (this includes SSR)
takes more than 3 minutes between tutorial/activity stops
is loud or disruptive in the hallway
tears/wads/or soils the seminar passing sheet
must go to locker or get a drink
fills out their seminar pass incorrectly or incompletely
A loss of FIVE points will occur each time the student:
arrives tardy (unexcused) (this includes failure to bring an admit slip for the previous period)
arrives without materials (this includes SSR materials)
A loss of TEN points will occur each time the student:
does not return to seminar by the end of the period
changes the destination or time on a pass
forges a signature
loses his/her seminar passing sheet
skips or has an unexcused absence
sleeps
refuses to work (this includes SSR) is reported by a hall monitor or other
staff member for seminar misbehavior
If a student has an EXCUSED absence (non-school related), the student will
receive ZERO POINTS out of ZERO POSSIBLE for that day.
If a ZERO is earned during a seminar period, the student will NOT be allowed
to leave the room for the following seminar (students with an unexcused or
school related absence may pass as usual).
If a TARDY is earned during a seminar period, the student will NOT be allowed
to leave the room for that seminar.
All student handbook rules will be strictly enforced. Continued behavior
disruptions will result in a referral to the student's grade level
administrator.
