SECTION II: ATTENDANCE/TARDY POLICY
Attendance is one of the most significant factors leading to
student academic success. Important,
instructional activities and interactions between teachers and
students in the classroom cannot be
exactly duplicated outside the classroom environment. We believe
that students with good attendance
and positive work habits are most likely to be successful in
future careers We expect all students to
attend their classes every day, on time and ready to learn.
At JCHS we feel attendance is a
shared
responsibility between students, parents/guardians and the high
school staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF STUDENTS, PARENTS, TEACHERS AND STAFF
STUDENTS
— Attend
school regularly, participate in the learning process, meet attendance
expectations
of parents and teachers, complete course requirements (including
make-up work when absences are
unavoidable).
PARENTS — Make
school attendance a priority; notify the school of any absences according to
school
policy, schedule appointments or trips before or after school
time.
TEACHERS — Deliver
meaningful instruction, expect prompt student attendance, and when attendance/
tardy problems occur, communicate with students, parents,
counselors and/or administrators.
STAFF —Develop and
maintain a school climate conducive to effective instruction and learning.
ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES
If a student is absent from school or is going to be absent the
following procedure should be followed:
1.
The
parent/guardian must call the school before, on the day, or day after the
student is absent.
If the parent/guardian is unable to telephone, a parent/guardian
note must accompany the student on
the day he/she returns to school. For reasons other than illness
or emergency, prior
arrangements
must be made with the school administration and teachers for the
absence(s) to be excused.
If the school is not notified within 3 days the absences will be
considered unexcused.
2. On the day the student returns, he/she is to immediately
report to his/her Academy Office. The
student will be given an admittance slip verifying the absence(s)
as excused or unexcused and it
will serve as the student’s admittance slip to class.
3.
Students
arriving late to class must report directly to class. Student tardy will be
recorded by
the classroom teacher as unexcused unless verification is
received from the academy office.
4. Students who miss all or part of a school day will comply
with the Activity Participation and Attendance
Policy as outlined in Section VIII: Activities/Athletics/Student
Organizations as directed by KSHSAA.
Students are expected to be at school and in class the following
morning when classes begin following
an activity the previous night.
CLASSIFICATION OF ABSENCES
1. Excused absences —
an excused absence is one where prior
notification was made by the
parent, or where the absence was due to illness or emergency as
verified by the parent
by phone on the day of the absence or by written note on the day
the student returns to
school.
2. Unexcused absences — any absence from school or class — other
than a school-related absence
— that is not defined as an excused absence shall be unexcused.
A student who does not present
a stamped admittance slip to each of his/her teachers on arrival
to class will be considered to have
an unexcused absence for that class.
Teachers will notify the attendance monitor if a student
accumulates two consecutive absences.
CONFIRMED SKIPS
A confirmed skip occurs when the parent confirms that the
student was absent without the parent’s
permission.
Junction City High School neither recognizes nor condones organized or
unorganized
“skip” days.
MAKE-UP WORK DUE TO ABSENCES.
After an excused absence, an opportunity to make up the missed
work will be extended provided
the student contacts the teacher when he/she returns to class.
It is the student’s responsibility
to make this contact. Students involved in school-related
absences must contact their teachers
a day ahead for assignments.
The amount of work to be made up and a reasonable deadline for
the work to be completed will be a
personal matter between the student and the teacher. The teacher
will document such agreements to
minimize misunderstandings. Teachers using attendance as a part
of their grading policy will not penalize
students whose absences are excused or due to school-related
activities. If a student is responsible and
asks for make-up work, teachers shall inform students of
assignments missed during the unexcused
absence; however, teachers have the option of denying credit for
makeup work resulting from an
unexcused absence.
The student may on his/her own initiative
make up missed work, and in so
doing, maintain continuity of learning by obtaining the
knowledge necessary for further study.
STUDENTS LEAVING DURING SCHOOL HOURS
Parents and students are encouraged to schedule appointments
outside of school hours. Parents/guardians
of students who must leave during school hours should contact
the academy office. The office will
issue a pass.
Students must sign out and in through their academy office.
COMPULSORY ATTENDANCE ENFORCEMENT PROCEDURE
In compliance with K.S.A. 72-1113, students under the age of 18
(unless previously exempted from
compulsory attendance requirements) absent without excuse on
either 3 consecutive school days or 5 school
days in any semester or 7 school days in any school year, shall
be reported to the County Attorney.
If the absences are not cleared by the next school day after
delivery, the school administrator will assign
and notify the parent/guardian and the student that they are
required to attend a meeting with the Assistant
County Attorney at the Court Room at 936 West Sixth Street. A
copy of the letter is sent to the County
Attorney’s office. The student is placed on monitoring status
with the Attendance Monitor. The student
is required to sign in and out.
TARDY POLICY (Unexcused)
Teachers will follow the established tardy policy and procedure
(listed below). They will also
notify the
administration of any recurring tardy problems.
First tardy —Teacher will conference and review school tardy
policy with student.
Second tardy — Teacher will assign 15 minutes of detention, and
notify parent.
Third tardy — Teacher will forward a referral to the Academy
Principal.

Administrator. (OSS)
